Synopsis

HOW DO YOU HIDE FROM A KILLER WHEN HE'S IN YOUR MIND?
Emily Monroe conceals her psychic gift from the world, but her abilities are much too strong to keep hidden from a killer who shares her powers.
A savvy private investigator, Emily discreetly uses her gift to solve cases. When the police ask her to assist on a new case, she learns the killer they seek is not only psychic, but fixated on her. He uses his victims as conduits to communicate with her, and she hears their screams while they are tortured. She opens her mind to help the victims, but it gives him a portal that he uses to lure her to him. With the killer taking over her mind, she must somehow stop him before she becomes his next victim.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Angie Martin has studied criminal behavior and forensics for most of her life, which comes through in the incredible detail in the book. In college, she was a member of the American Criminal Justice Association, LAE, and won trophies in regional competition in crime scene investigation as well as two testing areas.
The author of the well-received suspense novel, False Security, takes the concept of “psychic” to an all-new, terrifying plane with her thriller, Conduit. Starring private investigator Emily Monroe, Conduit pits Emily’s psychic abilities against an equally gifted serial killer who tries to take over her mind and lure her to him. The book returns readers to the Midwest city of Wichita for a suspenseful, thrilling ride they will not soon forget.

Excerpt from Conduit

Jake took her hands. “This isn’t something I’m used to. I only know that I want to see you again tonight.”
“I need to see you again tonight,” Emily said. “I...I can’t explain that.”
“I can’t explain it, either. Nor would I have ever believed this would happen with us. Less than 48 hours ago, you were yelling at me.”
“I wasn’t yelling.”
Jake laughed. “Oh, you were yelling at me without actually raising your voice.”
“I guess I was.” Embarrassed, Emily shook her head. “I’m so sorry about that.”
“No, no. You have nothing to be sorry about. But it’s part of this. I couldn’t understand why that happened at the party. Even though I’m sorry it happened because it invaded your mind, in a way I’m glad it did.”
Emily couldn’t stop the large smile from crossing her face. “I am, too. It really freaked me out at the time, but I’m glad it happened.”
“Why don’t I pick you up at seven tonight?”
“I have a better idea. I’ll text you my address. Let me cook for you tonight.”
“Home-cooked meal. Can’t argue with that.” He glanced at his watch. “Unfortunately, I have to get back to work now. Jury selection starts on Monday for the next big trial and I’m meeting with Nathan this afternoon.”
Emily furrowed her brow. “Are you sure it doesn’t make you uncomfortable that—”
“No,” Jake said. “I trust that your relationship with Nathan is in the past. You don’t seem like the kind of girl who would hold onto a flame for someone while starting one with another.”
“A flame, huh?” Emily moved closer to him and laced her fingers behind his neck. She rose up on the tips of her toes and pressed her lips to his. “Feels more like a fire to me. Seven o’clock, my house.”
“I can’t wait,” he whispered, and kissed her again.

Why Angie Martin writes

It’s really very simple. I write because I have to. I don’t think I have much of a choice. Words have always been part of me, imaginary characters have always played in my mind. I love to just observe life around me and draw inspiration from what I see. I used to play a game with an old friend of mine (who now also writes), where we’d people watch from afar, and make up what people were saying. I would try to make up stories for people I saw walking down the road and try to figure out where they were going. I have always felt drawn to the story and my brain firmly lives in that realm between reality and fiction. Even though it’s not always easy being a writer, these characters and stories are something I would never want to live without.

Inspiration for writing Conduit

Conduit came about in an interesting manner. It never started out as a book about a psychic, or even a novel about a serial killer. My best friend and I had always joked about opening a private investigating agency together. It was nothing more than something that we thought would be fun, given my background in criminal justice and her exceptional ways of getting people to tell her whatever she wanted to know. Eventually I thought that while I’d never open a private investigating firm, I could always write about one!

The concept started with the two best friends and grew from there. As the characters developed in my mind, I realized that the main character was psychic who would be up against the challenge of a lifetime. Then the book evolved into more than a psychic PI pitted against a psychic serial killer, and the love story between Jake and Emily came through. Their love in my mind is something that really needed to be captured, especially considering everything that unfolds when they find each other. So while there are a few different stories that one can latch onto, my hope is that the story of Jake and Emily makes a huge impact on the reader.

INTERVIEW WITH ANGIE MARTIN FOR INDIEWORLDPUB.COM

An interview with suspense author Angie Martin by Marisa Oldham
MO: Tell us about yourself.
AM: Outside of being a writer, I live in a mountain community in California with my husband and our pets. Our two sons are grown and off living their lives. I was raised in Wichita, Kansas, which is where my books take place. I am a massive geek, and love playing video games, reading comics, and going to comic book conventions. “Conduit” actually has very subtle references throughout the book to one of my favorite video game series, along with a couple other geek-driven references.
MO: When did you start writing?
AM: I started writing stories in eighth grade. I wrote a silly fan fiction story in response to “The Lost Boys” and I never stopped writing.
MO: How many books have you written and what do you have in the works?
AM: I have published one other book to date, a suspense novel, “False Security.” I am releasing a poetry and short story anthology (“the three o’clock in the morning sessions”) toward the end of March. I am working on several projects, including a horror short story and the next Emily Monroe novel.
MO: Regarding Conduit, your soon to be released paranormal thriller, where did your idea for this story come from?
AM: I always wanted to do a private detective mystery novel. My best friend and I used to joke about opening a private investigating agency together. I thought if I can’t open one, I can always write about one! The psychic / paranormal part of the novel is a little harder to nail down as to where the inspiration came from. I personally do not believe in psychics, which actually made the journey so much fun. Since I didn’t believe in it, I could do whatever I wanted with the idea of being psychic, and I ended up creating a unique perspective on having psychic abilities. It was fun to watch Emily grow in her abilities, and her gift will continue to evolve in future novels.
MO: What three words would you use to describe Emily's character?
AM: Strong, caring, and intelligent. While these are great traits to have, sometimes they work against her.

I Love Story Time's Review By Jenn

I was completely captivated from the very beginning. Angie Martin started the book with an exceptional hook to keep you wanting to turn the page. I caught myself wanting to read faster and faster...just to find out what was going to happen...or how they were going to solve the crimes. I laughed...cried...and I even had to take a break at times because I was afraid to turn the page! It was suspenseful...yet a story of having a connection with someone that is incomprehensible. I truly enjoyed from the beginning to the end!

Emily Monroe is a private investigator who shares a business, Monroe & Reid Investigators, with her best friend Cassie Reid. They normally deal with insurance fraud or the cheating husband...but the book takes a twist when they are asked by Cassie's Uncle Leo, Detective Lieutenant Lionel Edwards, to help them solve an ongoing case...a serial killer!!!

Enters...the darkness...David Noakes

"David didn't start out as a killer, nor did he ever intend to be one...he embraced his darker side, one he explored through vivid fantasy, but he never thought his fantasies would seep into his realities".

David is psychotic and heartless! He reels the women in and then leads them through their worst nightmare...alive...to remember every ounce of pain. David uses his victims in a sadistic way to get closer to Emily...who he thinks is his "true love".

Emily has a gift...she is psychic. She is able to hear people and visualize things that a normal person can't. She begins to feel a darkness start to overtake her mind...and it isn't until she is helping with the case...that the darkness gets stronger. She starts to question what's happening to her and how she is going to keep the darkness from over taking her and losing herself completely.

Enters...the light...Jake Hanley....

Jake Hanley is something else. He is the perfect gentleman...the "forever". He is completely intrigued with the spell that Emily has on him. They are both drawn to each other with a special connection. They both know they can't be without the other, but so afraid to let the other in. It's beautiful to see their relationship unravel.

"She allowed herself a moment to think about him as a man, as someone with whom she would love..."

Angie Martin did an amazing job keeping the story line suspenseful...on the edge of your seat...but also adding a love story in the midst of it. It will make you angry at times...wondering how and when they are going to catch him...and if they do...will it be before he gets to Emily...or will David get what he's always wanted, Emily?!? I would HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who loves suspense.

If I can be honest...I still feel the darkness with me!!! Even though; I'm done reading the book, I catch myself still thinking about David. Questioning...what is reality?? Is there a real David out there??? When that happens...you know you have read a great book!!

5 Stars for Angie Martin's Conduit

<3 Jen
