Covered in Coal (Buried Secrets, #1)Covered in Coal by Silla Webb
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

**** I Love Story Time was gifted an ARC in exchange for an honest review ****

3 Stars!

I remember when Covered In Coal came out, and after reading the synopsis and noticing all the 5 star ratings, I was looking forward to reading it. So...when I was offered to read an ARC copy in exchange of an honest review, I was excited to get started. Unfortunately, I did not connect with this story as much as I had hoped. It definitely had some twist and turns throughout the story, but I felt that I needed more. When I read the prologue, I was intrigued but as I continued on, I found myself struggling and wanting to skim through to only the characters that I was interested in. Although it was well written, one of the major reason's that I may have had a difficult time with connecting with this story is because it written in more of a country context, and I usually am not one to fall in love with or connect with that type of dialogue.

As for the story in general, I will say it was good. Carly Jo left town when she felt she had no support when she needed it the most. Her boyfriend Colton broke up with her and her dad just turned his back on her. With no other choice, she leaves town to start a new life for herself. After having no contact with her family or her past for 7 years, she returns home. Carly Jo's dad is sick and on his death bed and when he passes away she finds out he's named her the CEO of Simon Coal Company.

Now as the CEO, Carly Jo's life has completely changed once again. She is learning the ropes of the business and never planned on coming face to face with her past...Colton. Colton claims that he is still in love with Carly Jo and let's her know that he will do what ever he has to do to get her back. Carly also finds herself making friends with an old friend from high school...Luke.

Colton and Carly Jo's relationship starts out slowly due to the fact that Carly doesn't feel that she can trust him. However, over time, Colton starts to work his way back into Carly's heart. When it comes to Carly Jo and Luke's friendship...I was drawn more to their story. Carly can tell that Luke has a past that he is still getting over, and Luke can see the same pain in Carly's eyes that he sees in his own. Together they help each other to work through their past. I don't know what it is about Luke, but I connected with him more then I did with Colton. There was just something about his character that drew me in. When I found out what caused Luke's pain, my heart broke for him. I can't imagine going through what he had to live with daily. I think the best part of the story for me was the last few chapters. The turn of events that took place is exactly what I wanted. I would love for that storyline to continue.

As for the ending, it does leave you with a cliffhanger. I'm interested to see where the author will go with this part of the story. I would love for it to go a certain way, but I'm not quite sure some readers would be happy with that outcome. So for me...depending on the way the story continues, it can be a big turning point for me when it comes to this series.
