The Suicide King by Vanessa Marie ~ Review by Juls

The Suicide KingThe Suicide King by Vanessa Marie
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

When Vanessa Marie contacted our blog in regards to reading, The Suicide King, she stated she wrote a story that put her way outside of her comfort zone. I can honestly say that reading it, put me in that same comfort zone. It’s not that it isn’t a story that everyone should read. It’s a story that not everyone can read. If you're looking for a happy go lucky story with a happily ever after, this is not it. If you're looking for something that will grab your attention, a story that will show you how one simple decision we make can affect everyone, THIS is it. Vanessa has written about a topic that most people have a hard time just talking about, let alone reading about. I can understand why she did it. Unfortunately, it’s something that people nowadays are too familiar with. Her spin on it shows us, in a unique way, the aftermath of such an awful situation. A situation that I wish that no one would have to go through. A situation that I hope and pray that if someone is thinking about it, will ask for help. Maybe even reading this will open the eyes of many to seek the help that is needed other than making such a sacrifice.

“You know as well as I that you can’t put a label on what we are. We’re just Amelia and Tobias. We’re moon and earth, living among the stars and sun. We’re everything. And no matter the distance, we still make sense together.”

I am seriously enjoying this series so far!!! I think it has to do with all the dancing and the attached YouTube videos? Genius!! Prior to reading this, I went back and read Center of Gravity since I had the time. I really wish that book would of had the YouTube videos as well. I would have loved to see Theo and Lex dance together. To add that tidbit this time around? It just made it that much better!! That really connects us readers with the storyline on a whole new level! Definitely bonus points for that! I loved Tobias and Amelia’s story! Toby stole my heart, and I loved that he didn’t give up on his dreams. K.K. Allen gave us a great story with the perfect amount of angst and drama. Nothing was over dramatic. Anyone looking for a sexy read that is into dance as well, this would be the perfect fit!

Excerpt:
“Where can we find the best view in Los Angeles?” I had to think about that one. Every trail I’d hiked in the area ended with a gorgeous view, but I didn’t think a hike was what he’d had in mind. That gave me an idea. “Griffith Observatory has some nice views. Not sure how parking is this time of night.” I was still thinking. “Or there’s always Canyon Lake Drive.” The look he gave me next wrapped a string around my heart and tugged gently. “Somewhere you haven’t been with a dude.” Forcing back my smile, I grabbed his phone. “Drive. I’ll program the directions so I can enjoy the ride.” I tried to ignore the pleased look on his face when I blushed at his request, but it was almost impossible to ignore him when I handed back his phone and my fingers accidentally brushed his. Our eyes connected on a beat, the electricity so charged between us that I felt the vibration throughout my body. We rode the rest of the way in silence, like we both knew the conversation to come was a big one. Besides that, neither of us was a fan of small talk. Maybe that was why we’d always gotten along so well. We preferred hours of comfortable silence to awkward conversation. It made each moment we were together meaningful. “Almost there,” he said once we were on Western Canyon Drive. “Where should I park?” “You’ll keep going up the hill. Park on West Observatory Road. You’ll see the line of cars. I usually find a spot up close, but—” I made a face as I looked around his truck. “My car is three times smaller than this.” I grinned at him. “You might want to park about a half mile away.” He chuckled. I didn’t understand why until he continued driving past where I recommended and almost reached the top of the hill, when he slowed. Just then, like fucking magic, a large truck was pulling out of a parallel parking spot, leaving it vacant. “You are kidding me.” He laughed again and parked with ease. Growing up in Malibu didn’t give us many opportunities for parallel parking, but I was certain he’d had his fair share of chances to get it right in Chicago. I hopped out of the truck just as he made it to my side. “So impatient to hang out with me.” I rolled my eyes. “Keep dreaming, James.” He rolled his head back, grinning. “You realize there are women out there dreaming about a night just like this, right?” I hoped he could feel the heat of my glare. “You don’t say.” His lips pressed together like he was biting back a smile, then he took my hand in his and tugged me forward. “Let’s move. We have to make it before sunset.” This time, silence didn’t fill our gaps. It dissipated with the first view we encountered before ever reaching the observatory. “Wow.” I tugged away from him and walked to the balcony of the outlook. As I stared out over trees and rock mountains, I had an epiphany. Taking Tobias here conveyed an unspoken promise that I’d never shared the same space with another man. I hadn’t even questioned the intimacy of what that meant, because it felt natural, just like everything with Tobias, even when the world was trying to pull us apart. My choice had always been Tobias, even when he wasn’t around for me to choose. My heart still belonged to him. A breeze whooshed by, tossing my hair. I breathed into the wind as it continued to beat against me, like the week hadn’t been enough for me to endure. And then strong arms wrapped around me from behind as my insides softened to putty. It had been only a week of knowing Tobias was back in town to stay, and I already knew I was in trouble. Neither of us dared a word as he held me there, the hills of LA a beautiful sight before us, but it was his touch, his breath, his nearness that stole my focus. We’d never even made it to the observatory, but I knew what his mission was in wanting to take me somewhere with a view. It was reminiscent of the one we’d shared in Big Sur, and I couldn’t ignore the rush of those memories that surfaced in the moment. We stood in silence for a long time while Tobias held all of me—physically, emotionally, and metaphorically. His presence grounded me in a way that only my soul could feel. He owned me. All it took was the admission, and for the first time in a very long time, I felt at peace. Once upon a time, Tobias had called me his moon. His rock. His strength. The one he reached for when the waters got rough. As risky as it was to admit it, I still wanted that to be true. “Should we keep going?” I knew Tobias was referring to the observatory, but my response was to a different interpretation of the question. “Yes.”

Million Dollar Marriage by Katy Evans
Release Date: July 23, 2019

COVER.jpg

Million Dollar Marriage, an all-new standalone contemporary romance by Katy Evans.
If someone had bet Nell a million dollars that she would be saying “I do” to a complete stranger on national television, she’d have called them crazy, but with her crushing student loan payments sending her deep into the red, she’s out of options. This should be nothing more than a business transaction—until she sets eyes on her groom, and everything changes.
The game is on the instant Luke spots Penelope “Nell” Carpenter. He’s out for the money, yes, but getting a little dirty with Nell doesn’t sound too bad either. Everyone knows he’s not the marrying kind, so it’s a good thing it’s just for show. God knows he’s the worst guy his pretty wife should pick for real.
They have nothing in common, but if they want the grand prize, they’ll have to beat out eight other couples. Proving that total opposites attract should be easy enough…as long as they don’t fall in love in the process.

Excerpt:
I’m going to lose my lunch. It’s the live finale the entire country has been waiting for. The arena is packed to the gills with reporters, cameras pointed at us. Flashbulbs go off, and my future seems to flash through my eyes with them. Everything depends on what will happen in the next hour. We could give our answer in a split second, but not now. I know the announcer will drag things out to the point of sheer madness. Recaps of poignant moments from the season, interviews with contestants, performances by “special celebrity guests” who are also fans of the show. It’s all meant to build up to the moment of truth. Every one of the people in this arena, every one of the thirteen million people watching at home—they’re all waiting on the edge of their seats with the same question. Will they . . . or won’t they? I wish to god we could just give our answer and be done. He’s so close, but he might as well be a million miles away. Our fingers entwined, he waves at the crowd cheering our names. His hand isn’t the least bit clammy. I manage a peek at him, his chiseled features, his relaxed smile, and my throat catches. No wonder the world is in love with him. No wonder he’s been the fan favorite since week one. This is it. The end. Or . . . I look over at him and say, “Luke . . . I’m not . . .” He shakes his head almost imperceptibly. “It’s okay,” he murmurs, his fingers stroking my palm. “Breathe, Penny. Just breathe.” So I do. But air is not the only thing I need to make me okay right now. We’ve been through so much, more than most couples will go through in entire lifetimes. And now we’re about to make the decision that will shape our future. To think, seven months ago, I didn’t even know Luke Cross. Three months ago, I despised him. But somewhere along the line, things changed. Somewhere along this crazy little adventure we’ve been having, played out on television for the entire world to see, I did what I told myself I’d never do. I don’t even know how it happened, but as I look back, it seems so inevitable. Like I couldn’t have stopped it, even if I’d tried. But just because it was meant to happen doesn’t mean it will last forever . . .

Million Dollar Marriage For The Win!

THIS book is SO good! The storyline is a fun, adventurous page turner, and the sexual tension had me giddy with anticipation. Luke Cross is raw, rough, and super HOT! I loved it! Katy Evans' has once again nailed it!

Luke and Penelope's love story was incredibly refreshing. Different than anything I have read before. I really enjoyed watching these complete opposites work through uncomfortable situations and unsavory challenges. Their confessionals were insightful and a lot of fun to read. This story could not have been more entertaining. It was like watching a really good, angst filled episode of The Amazing Race!

From the very start, Luke was so patient and protective of Penelope. He was a gentleman, but oozed sex and masculinity. He had me swooning and salivating all over the pages! I adored Penelope, and I really liked how she blossomed from a meek church mouse to a confident woman. The growth of both characters was endearing. Together, they were unstoppable.

Million Dollar Marriage is a 2019 Must Read! If you are looking for an entertaining read, something outside the typical romance trope, but with all the heat and angst, this it it! I highly recommend!

MAKING UP TEASER NINE AN.jpg

Excerpt:

We’re a couple of minutes away from my apartment, which also means we’re almost at the end of our date. End-of-date protocol often means a goodnight kiss. And I’ve eaten onions. Lots of them. What the hell was I thinking? I feel around in my shorts pocket, hoping I have a random stick of gum. I find a tiny square packet and pull it out, along with an old tissue. I shove that back in my pocket and sigh with relief as I carefully open the Listerine Pocketpak. There’s one strip left. I pop it in my mouth, wishing I had water since my mouth is dry and I’m suddenly super nervous. Griffin pulls up in front of my apartment building. I swallow a bunch of times, trying to get the strip to dissolve on my tongue and glance out the tinted window, seeing it from his perspective. I don’t live in a bad part of town, but I sure as hell wouldn’t leave this car sitting out here for any length of time unless I wanted it keyed or stripped down. Griffin shifts into park and turns to me, one hand resting on the back of my seat near the headrest. “I had a great time, Cosy.” “Me too, thanks for dinner.” I tried to fork over my share, but he was quick on the credit card draw. “It was my pleasure.” He leans in the tiniest bit, a nonverbal cue that he’s going in for a kiss. I mirror the movement, giving him the go ahead. My stomach flutters in anticipation. I exhale slowly through my nose. Even though the Listerine strip should be doing its job to mask the onions, I don’t want to ruin the moment by breathing that in his face. His fingertips skim my jaw, and I close my eyes. And then his lips brush my cheek. I wait for them to move a couple of inches to the right, but after what feels like a lot of seconds—and is probably only a few—I crack a lid. Griffin is still close, a wry smile on his lips and a smolder in his eyes. “Seriously, that’s it? A kiss on the cheek?” His smile widens, making his eyes crinkle at the corners. He’s nothing like the guys I usually end up on dates with. College boys don’t take things slow. If I were out with one of the guys from school, I’d be sitting in a beat-up Civic with some stupid music playing, and he’d be all over me with his tongue halfway down my throat, copping a feel. “I thought all the onions you ate were the equivalent to garlic for vampires.” Griffin fingers my hair near my shoulder. I’d really like him to finger something else. Wait. I mean I’d like to feel his hands on me. Not in my pants. Okay, maybe I’d like them in my pants, but not after date number one. “I wasn’t thinking, and I really like onions. A lot. In hindsight, it’s not a great date food. I feel kinda dumb. And I guess at first I wasn’t so sure about you. How was I supposed to know you’d actually be kind of normalish?” “Normalish?” “Well, you drink club soda on purpose, so you can’t be all there.” I tap his temple. Griffin circles my wrist with his fingers and drops his head, lips brushing over my knuckle. “We can’t all be perfect, now, can we?” “I suppose not, and perfect is boring.” “That it is.” He hums against my skin, and I feel it through my entire body. “I would like to try that kiss again, if you’re still interested.”

Aww... what a fun, cute read! I really liked it! I absolutely loved Griffin's character. I enjoyed watching him go from the ego-bruised, insecure guy, to the confident, alpha male. He and Cozy heated up the pages with their chemistry! Their story is the perfect story to get lost in and enjoy a bit of time away from reality.

I have adored all of the Mills men and their stories. The Shacking Up world is definitely one to dive in to. Like the others, Making Up will leave your heart full and a smile on your face.

Whatever Happens by Micalea Smeltzer - Review by Juls

“You saved me, Nebula. You gave me a reason to keep my feet on Earth. I don’t have to search the stars for meaning anymore. Not when I have you.”

Talk about all the feels!! The epilogue gave me goosebumps! Fin’s words, though they were far and few between, had such an impact. I really liked him. I loved that his character is not perfect. It reminds us that in reality not everyone lives life so easily. The characters were great, and I loved the way their relationship started. Seeing how much Fin grew because of Violet was perfect. They were exactly what each other needed in life to be able to move on. Whatever Happens is a great story that I’m sure many will enjoy. As for me? Well...

“My life has been irrevocably changed by Finnley Crawford, and I don’t ever want it to go back.”

I have adored all of the Mills men and their stories. The Shacking Up world is definitely one to dive in to. Like the others, Making Up will leave your heart full and a smile on your face.

What Comes After by Melissa Toppen - Cover Reveal

Title: What Comes After
Author: Melissa Toppen
Genre: Contemporary Romance (standalone)
Release Date: August 9, 2019 Cover Design: Melissa Gill Designs
Life is full of many things.
Love.
Loss.
Heartbreak.
Laughter.
No matter how small, each moment has value.
Then there are the big moments.
The moments that define us.
And the people who shape our very existence.
Abel Collins is that person for me.
From the very first time our eyes locked, I knew there was something about him. That he was the person that would change everything.
And he did.
But Abel isn’t just any man…
His past is his prison.
His guilt keeps him chained.
His grief defines him.
And now it’s up to me to set him free.
To make him see that life isn’t just about what we’ve lost but what we still stand to gain.
Because it’s not about what came before, but what comes after.
